What to do after successful B school admissions? - MBAkarma

After months of perseverance and hard work you have been successful at B school admissions.

Preparing for the GMAT. Writing multiple Essays and Letters of Recommendation. Preparing for Interviews.

Phew.

But now look at you 🙂

But like most accomplishments in life, an MBA is another bridge for you to cross and reach your goals.

Take a few days off and relax, it has been worth it. But once you are done reveling get yourself back into the game and prepare for what is about to come.

Between admission result and attending business school, you should be spending a few months working on the following.

(Yeah. It really is a never ending battle)
How to spend time between B School admissions and commencement
  1. Celebrate 🙂 Do your happy dance! Get drunk. Or whatever it is that you do to celebrate. You will fondly remember this as one of the sweetest times of your life and will rarely get such a carefree time. You have achieved something that you set out to do. Small or big, all victories must be celebrated.
  2. Meet your Well wishers– Meet your friends, family as you may not get a chance to do so as frequently as you like during your MBA. Especially if you are moving to a different city or country. An MBA can be a little hectic (and heavy on the pocket). Take this chance.
  3. Improve at your Job– If you are employed then start working even harder and start delivering even better results. Do not let your B school admissions make you complacent. Your employer will respect you and you will exit on a high, leaving doors open for future opportunities as they will remember you as a high performer. Remember- First impression is the last impression, But Last impression is the everlasting impression!
  4. Plan Finances– Plan how you wish to finance your MBA (tuition fees + living expenses). Save more from your salary, figure out loans or scholarships well ahead in time. Saving more will help you immensely and you will thank yourself later.
  5. Read– In general read a lot. Not only in your areas of interest but outside of it too. Newspaper, books, general knowledge anything you can get your hands on. This is to build a habit that helps to read fast and retain maximum content. You will be reading a lot during your MBA. Especially pages and pages of Case studies. You will have limited time to absorb everything on a case study and come to conclusions. Think of reading pre-MBA as a warm up. It will really help you.
  6. Up-skill– You could spend time reading some pre-MBA courses that could give you a head start academically, especially in areas you are weak. Also spend time getting a little familiar with oft used tools such as spreadsheets, PowerPoint etc.
  7. Network with Batch mates– Create a Whats-app, LinkedIn or Facebook group to bring your MBA batch mates together. Meeting or speaking before the MBA will help break ice earlier and you won’t be meeting 100% strangers.
  8. Plan your move– This applies if you are moving cities and will require some effort.
  9. Make a Goal List– Make a list of things you want to achieve at the B-School. Professionally & Personally. Say you want to take part in a lot of extracurricular activities. Or really want to study a subject in Finance. Or want to be a part of the some student group. Note all this down. Use this as a reference whenever you feel tied up or lost in B-School.
  10. Help others– Help anyone you can from your experience. Your juniors who are seeking a B school admissions or peers who did not get an admit. Anyone who you can help in fulfilling their MBA dream.
  11. Remember– Write a small note on who you were and what you felt before MBA. Use this as a motivation whenever you feel bogged down by academic pressure or lose clarity. You can also use this as something to mention when you become a successful leader years later 🙂

Do not worry about academics. The B-School will anyway force you to take care of that.

Just have fun!
