Once you are done with the MBA written application, the agonizing wait begins. How should you spend your time while waiting for the elusive MBA interview invite?
I highly recommend spend the interim time on the following-
KNOW THYSELF
- Identify at least three key strengths from your essays and letters of recommendation.
- Make notes on how these strengths can help you to-
- Learn and meet your career goals after the MBA
- Contribute to the learning and culture of the B School
- Identify three key weaknesses from your essays and letters of recommendation.
- Make notes on how will you eliminate or reduce these weaknesses at the B School.
KNOW THY APPLICATION
- Read your essays. A hundred times over.
- Internalize, understand and believe every word that is written.
- You should know what message each word and every sentence is sending out and why you are trying to send that message.
KNOW THY GOALS
- Know your short term goal and target companies after B School.
- Know what skills you are missing and why you cannot reach this goal without an MBA.
- Know key skills that you already have that will help you in getting the short term role.
- Know your Long term goal after B School.
- Know how your short term goal will help you reach this goal after an MBA.
KNOW THY B SCHOOL
- Know the program and B School you have applied to.
- Do your research and note down specific things that attract you to the B School-
- Specializations
- Subjects or Courses
- Professional Clubs or Activities
- Projects
- Extracurricular Clubs or Activities
- Professors
- Companies
- Miscellaneous
- Know why you are interested in these.
- Know how you will contribute to each of these.
NOW PRACTICE
- Build clarity for the interviews and Practice answers in your mind everyday so that till the D-Day your thought process is polished.
- Keep in mind preparation for the interview does not happen in the 5 days between the invite and the actual interview.
