One word- TRUST. Here are some pointers to start building trust.

1. Read their past work– This could be on Blogs, Social Media, Quora. Most of this is free advice. What kind of advice are they offering on these forums? Does is sound helpful? Or are they just marketing for more business by giving hallow advice?
2. Speak to them– If their work interest you, go ahead and speak to them. A phone call, personal meeting or SKYPE call can go a long way.
3. Company vs Boutique Services– Who are you dealing with? A large organization or a small boutique setup? Both have their own pros and cons. You might become just another file number in a large consulting company and a boutique consultant may work with a limited number of applicants per year. Are they accepting payment from you without an initial discussion? Big red alert here. Choose wisely.
4. Services– What are they offering? Is the process and expectations clear? Will you be getting what you are looking for? Are they asking for payment before making things clear?
5. Affordability– No brainer here. Different consultants have different charges. Not all nationalities can afford the same charges. But don’t make this your main reason to select or reject an MBA Admissions Consultant. As with MBA try to judge the Return on Investment (ROI).

1. PLAN EARLY– One to Three Year before an MBA application. Start early and Improve your profile to
   increase your chances of admission at a top B-School. Begin this process the day you start thinking about an MBA.
2. PRE APPLICATION– Two to Six Months before an MBA application. Brainstorm and finalize realistic post-MBA Goals.
   Re-structure your CV. Shortlist the right fit of B-Schools. Begin this process along with your GMAT preparation.
3. APPLICATION STAGE– One month before application stage to during the MBA applications. Prepare application strategy.
   Write kick-ass essays. Review LORs. Begin this process two weeks before your GMAT date (if applying in the same year).
4. POST APPLICATION– Prepare for your interviews. Begin this process close to submitting the application.

Though the right answer to this is hidden in your profile, usually it is recommended to apply to 4-6 universities.
Less than this will not allow you to hedge your bets and more than this can get overwhelming and heavy on the pocket.

Again, this will depend on your life situation. Ideally you should begin at least 2 years before applying for an MBA.
This will give you enough time to internalize your career goals and spend this time improving your profile.

If you have already done this, then the next best time is to begin around 4-6 months before the applications
begin to finalize career goals and shortlist the right set of universities.
